We want you to reach your goals and aims!

This is where you will need willpower. We know you are strong enough to stick with this and finish the journey, you just need to believe in yourself. As mentioned earlier, changing your life requires you to add in small rituals and habits that will improve your health, vitality and mental strength. Find out more below on how habits are formed and how you can change them. Keep your goal in mind – we know you can do this!

How do habits develop?

A basic requirement for a habit to develop is a reward. Habits usually start as a conscious decision until they develop into automatism. This development of habits follows the so-called habit loop:

1. TRIGGER

A habit is triggered by a specific place, time, feeling, or event

2. ROUTINE

Performing the action (smoking, eating sweets, looking at your mobile phone, etc.)

3. REWARD

The execution of the action results in the release of the reward neurotransmitter dopamine.

Although habits can be very different from each other, they all have a trigger, a routine, and a reward. The routine can be an action, a thought, or a feeling.

So how can we change habits?

Changing a habit requires four steps:

1. Identify the routine

Identify the routine of the unwanted action that you want to refrain from or change in the future. The first step for change is always to become aware of the problem.

2. Find the reward

Now it is a matter of finding out what exactly the reward is from your habit. For some habits this is obvious, but for others, they aren’t quite so clear. For example, smoking can have several triggers like boredom, nicotine addiction and tension. To really find out what reward we get from our habit, it is a good idea to experiment with something new to replace it. For example, when you want to do a habit, try a distraction and see if that satisfies you instead, like using an anti-stress ball.

3. Find the trigger

Triggers can be various factors, such as:

  • A specific time of day or time
  • A specific location
  • A certain emotional state
  • The presence of certain persons
  • The immediately preceding action

4. Change your habit

To change the unwanted action, it is a good idea to consciously perform an alternative action each time the trigger occurs.

This way you can train new habits that are more beneficial to you, to replace the old ones.

Knowing about these mechanisms in habit formation and how they work will help you establish new routines in your life. Now you know that your brain keeps you on autopilot. Autopilot strives to keep you stuck in the circle of your usual experiences, the so-called comfort zone.

No learning or growth happens in the comfort zone.

So make the decision today to change your life for more relaxation, happiness and resilience. Even if the journey is a bumpy one, remember to keep at it. Your brain is in the process of forming new neural connections and eventually, the habits you learn will become your new normal and support you in living the life of your dreams. We wish you all the success in your journey and will be here to support you each step of the way.

One last tip:

Find your Change-Buddy !

In order to establish sustainable, positive habits in our lives, we need the willingness to take responsibility and have self-discipline. This is why we recommend you find a change buddy. This can be a friend, colleague, or your partner, as long as it is someone who will do the change with you. After all, we know how much harder it is to cancel on a friend than to just not do something. Take going for a run, for example, if you are on your own you might just decide to not do it, but if you have a friend telling you to go you are more likely to as you don’t want to let them down. You will return feeling so much happier that you went and it will be a great benefit to yourself.

It’s these sorts of tricks that can ensure you keep at it. Together you form a team that can motivate and help each other even when you feel like giving up. You will help each other to realize your full potential and have fun working together.

We are looking forward to taking this journey with you.
